Generally speaking, devices in different VLANs can’t communicate with each other. Therefore, we often use a router on a stick to forward packets between VLANs. This article introduces how to set up Omada gateway as a one-armed router and VLAN settings in the L2 switch. Take the topology below as an example.

PC 1 and PC 2 are in different VLANs. In order for 2 PCs communicate with each other, the uplink port 1 must be tagged in VLAN 10 and VLAN 100. ER605 receives packets from different VLANs, and forwards packets according to destination IP.

Note: Please make sure that the firmware of your Omada gateway is v1.1.1 or above, which already support multiple networks in standalone mode.

Configuration

Setp 1. Create multiple networks in ER605.

After logging in the management page of ER605, go to Network-LAN-Network List, click Add to create multiple networks. Here, we create 2 networks, VLAN 10 and VLAN 100 with corresponding IP address, subnet.

Step 2. Create corresponding VLANs in L2 switch.

Log in the management page of L2 switch, go to VLAN-802.1Q VLAN, enable 802.1Q VLAN Configuration. And then, add VLAN 10, VLAN 100. As mentioned above, the uplink port 1 must be tagged in VLAN 10 and VLAN 100. Since PC can’t recognize packets with 802.1Q VLAN tag, we must set the ports connected to PCs to untagged in corresponding VLANs. For example, port 2 is untagged in VLAN 10 and port 3 is untagged in VLAN 100.

Step 3. Modify PVID of the ports connected to PCs.

Go to VLAN-802.1Q PVID Setting, modify the PVID of the ports connected to PCs. In order for the switch add the corresponding 802.1Q VLAN tag when receiving packets from PCs, we must modify the PVID of ports connected to PCs. For example, the PVID of port 2 is 10, and PVID of port 3 is 100.

Verification

With the topology and all the settings above, PC 1 & pc 2 can obtain IP address from ER605, and communicate with each other.
